Termen presstitut (presstitute) myntades av den amerikanske trendanalytikern Gerald Celente. Den engelska termen presstitute kan direkt översättas till presstitut, ett ord som anspelar på prostitut dvs en prostituerad journalist.
Presstitut är besläktad med termen policyskribent. Skillnaden mellan orden är förslagsvis graden av presstitution dvs graden hur lättstyrd och policyanpassad en journalist är. En presstitut kan tex vara direkt betald eller kompenserad för att skriva på ett visst sätt till fördel för en viss part.
